No "Boots on the Ground" for Australia. But there will be "Merrells on the ground". Merrells are a popular footwear favored by special forces of many nations. Special Forces Contingent. There are reports that the Australian Special Forces are committed to the fight against ISIS. Their role - about 200 of them - is to advise and assist the Iraqi Special Operations Force (ISOF). Once legal agreements are completed with the Iraqi government they should commence their advise and assist mission. Australian Base. The Australians, at least the air support package, will operate out of an air base of the UAE. The RAAF Super Hornets have been hitting ISIS targets since October 3, 2014.
