May 2015

The provincial capital of Anbar province, Ramadi, falls to ISIS after the Iraqi Army makes a hasty withdrawal after over a year of fighting for the key city. The U.S. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter stated that Iraqi's lacked the will to fight. Iraqi leaders say the international coalition failed to support the Iraqi Army and did not provide needed airstrikes.

April 2015

April 2015. The Sunni city of Tikrit falls to Iraqi government troops supported by U.S. airpower. This occured after an unsuccessful attempt by Iranian-backed Shi-ite militias to take the city.
